MATERIAL Sales & DELIVERY

Proudly serving the Sault Ste. Marie community for over 50 years, Burton Excavating is the oldest continuously operating excavating company in the area.

Single-Axle

Great for small orders and tight delivery areas:

  • Capacity: 5.5 cubic yards
  • Truck Length: 17ft
  • Average Loaded Weight: 31,000lbs.

Tandem

Perfect for mid-sized orders without stepping up to a quad:

  • Capacity: 11 cubic yards
  • Truck Length: 23ft
  • Average Loaded Weight: 47,000lbs.

Quad-Axle

Quad-Axle

Quad-Axle

Requires level ground for dumping but can go places a semi can’t:

  • Capacity: 15 cubic yards
  • Truck Length: 25ft
  • Average Loaded Weight: 67,500lbs.

Semi

Quad-Axle

Quad-Axle

Best for large volumes or long hauls. Requires a wide, flat dumping area with no overhead wires:

  • Capacity: 22 cubic yards
  • Truck Length: 48–53ft
  • Average Loaded Weight: 100,000lbs.

*Important: We don’t recommend a semi for your first load. The box raises 28–30 ft in the air, and the truck must pull forward while dumping. Once the quad delivers and confirms your site is suitable, we can switch to a semi if it's available — often saving you money.

An Old Chapter in Material Delivery

In past years, material delivery was a key part of our business. As some of our senior team members transitioned away from heavy site work, many found a comfortable fit-in delivery role. They appreciated the lighter demands and enjoyed meeting the customers they served across the community.

Over time, other companies began offering similar services, and with the unfortunate passing of a couple of our long-time seasonal drivers, we found ourselves without a dedicated person to oversee deliveries. With Bruce focused on managing job sites and no one with the experience to build a structured delivery program, this part of our business gradually slowed down.

A New Chapter in Material Delivery

That’s now changed. Bruce set out to create a pricing system that would be fair to customers and match them with the right trucking for their needs. We recently hired a new truck driver who not only brought solid experience behind the wheel but also took initiative in improving our material delivery program. He researched pricing tools and helped implement one that works well for both us and our customers.

To meet a variety of delivery needs, we invested in a clean, efficient single-axle dump truck that hauls up to 5.5 yards — perfect for smaller, more precise deliveries. Combined with our larger trucks, we now offer a full spectrum of delivery options that help keep costs efficient for any job of any size.

With our own pit containing millions of yards of material and our own crushing and screening equipment, we’re able to produce consistent, high-quality products. We’re proud to be ready and equipped to offer the community reliable, professional, and competitively priced material delivery once again.

Smaller Trucks, Smarter Delivery

Our smaller truck is the least costly to operate, making it a more efficient option for small orders. Whether it’s hauling one yard or a full 5.5-yard load, the delivery cost for the truck remains the same — you're paying for the truck time and the material itself. So, if you only need one yard, you’re only paying for that one yard of material, not a full load - but the delivery cost stays the same because the truck still makes the trip.

Larger trucks follow the same principle, but because they cost more to run, using them for small loads isn’t as cost-effective. That’s one of the main reasons we invested in a dependable smaller truck — to better serve customers with modest delivery needs and keep prices reasonable.

We also understand that some customers only need a few yards. Many times, neighbors will coordinate and have material delivered to a shared location, splitting both the delivery fee and the material. This approach has worked out well for others and can be a great way to save.

How It Works

Our pricing system is designed for accuracy and fairness. By entering your address, we can calculate travel time from our closest location, one of our pits or our Easterday Avenue yard. Load time and dump time are fixed — the only variable is driving time. That means you only pay for the actual time it takes to deliver your material, without overcharges or inflated estimates.

If you're located farther away, our system helps you compare pricing and determine if it's still cost-effective to order from us.

DELIVERY TRUCK OPTIONS

We offer multiple truck sizes to match your load size and site accessibility. Whether it’s a small residential job or a commercial project, we’ve got the right truck for you.

*IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT DELIVERY*

Weight & Site Conditions Matter

  • Heavy trucks can damage finished driveways, lawns, or soft surfaces. Smaller trucks may cost more per yard but reduce the risk of damage.

⚠️ Burton Excavating is not responsible for any damage to:

  • Surfaces (paved or landscaped)
  • Tree limbs
  • Underground tanks or lines
  • Septic systems

*Know where your septic tank is and avoid soft areas where the truck might sink. If unsure, smaller loads may be the safer option.

QUALITY MATERIALS FROM OUR OWN PIT

We manufacture our own materials using our crushing and screening spread. Available materials include:

  • Screened Stone – Various sizes available
  • Clayish Sand – A blend of clay and silt, ideal for yard fill; holds moisture and reduces topsoil needs for a green lawn.
  • Screened Sand – Class 2 specification, clean      and consistent
  • Non-Screened Sand
  • Screened Topsoil
  • Crushed 22A Gravel
